Bread bowls—bowls made from round 面包 that are filled with piping hot 汤s 和 stews—are a special restaurant menu item, 和 a sought after food at the 鱼erman's Wharf in San Francisco (mainly seafood chowder in a sourdough 面包 bowl). But they don't have to only be enjoyed when dining out—面包 bowls are actually easy to make at home. And once you've made one, you may find a variety of ways to use a 面包 bowl, from 海鲜浓汤 和 creamy 汤s to chunky stews 和 party dips.
1 sourdough or Italian 面包 loaf, round or oval shaped
Olive oil, for coating the 面包
Gather ingredient. Pre-heat oven to 350 F.
Cut about 1/2 inch off the top of the loaf with a serrated knife.
Hollow out the 面包 by removing some of the 面包 from the inside. Leave about 1 1/2 inches of 面包 along the sides 和 bottom.
Brush olive oil on the inside of the 面包 bowl using a pastry brush or paper towel. This creates a seal, ensuring whatever you put in the 面包 bowl will not leak out.
Place the 面包 bowl on a baking sheet 和 bake for 15 minutes, until golden on the inside. Remove from the oven, 和 fill with desired 汤 or stew while still warm.
- To remove the 面包 from the inside of the loaf, you can simply scoop it out using your h和s. Or, if you prefer a quicker 和 slightly neater method, use a knife to cut sections first 和 then scoop out.
- Save the 面包 that has been scooped out to turn into 油炸面包丁 or 面包crumbs. If you have removed the inside as pieces, you can cut into cubes 和 toast in the oven. Then serve the 油炸面包丁 on top of the 汤 in the 面包 bowl, or save for later use. If the 面包 is in clumps, you can process it in a food processor 和 use as soft 面包crumbs to top casseroles 和 as filler in meatballs 和 meatloaf.
